Interventional radiology uses ultrasound, X-ray and other imaging to guide selected procedures. The choice of procedure depends on the diagnosis, imaging findings and individual circumstances.
Vascular interventions
Depending on the condition, vascular interventions may involve angiography, balloon angioplasty, catheter-based therapies, embolisation, or assessment of dialysis access. Not every narrowing or symptom requires an intervention.
Interventional oncology
For selected cancers, image-guided techniques may support biopsy, tumour-directed embolisation, ablation or symptom management, generally in collaboration with oncology and multidisciplinary teams.
Non-vascular interventional radiology
Image-guided tissue sampling, selected drainage and access procedures, and other targeted interventions may be considered where appropriate.
What happens before a procedure?
- A consultation reviews symptoms, imaging, medical history and current medicines.
- Benefits, alternatives and important risks are discussed for the specific proposed procedure.
- The appropriate hospital facility, equipment and follow-up plan are confirmed.
